Initially after an incident of sexual abuse the individual will feel fearful, panicked, upset and confused and it may take them some time to ground themselves and come to their senses. Often before any action is taken they experience a swamp of negative emotions which can sometimes include feelings of disgust in relation to the abuser, the situation and sometimes even themselves. This is caused by the feeling of violation which can make many people feel ashamed and dirty, even when the incident was not their fault. This can quickly turn to embarrassment and a feeling of un-comfort with their bodies and selves; fuelling a real sense of self hatred.
